Overcoat by 16 October: the Toronto order-by date, and why late November is too late

Updated October 2026 · Sam’s Menswear editorial team

A line drawing in white chalk on navy: a long overcoat on a hanger, with gold snowflakes around it and a small calendar with one day ringed in red
Drawn for this guide. The coat takes 35 days; the snow keeps its own calendar.

A custom overcoat takes 35 days from the first appointment to the finished coat. Most men start looking for one on the first properly cold morning, which in Toronto is usually in the second half of November. Count forward 35 days from there and the coat arrives in time for January.

The order date that works is Friday 16 October.

Fourteen seconds, sound optional.

Everyone looks in the same week

Google Trends for Ontario shows the same shape every year. Interest in “overcoat” climbs through October and peaks in late November:

  • 2022: the week of 20 November
  • 2023: the week of 19 November
  • 2024: the week of 24 November
  • 2025: the week of 23 November, the highest in five years

In 2025 the first five centimetres of snow came on 9 November, according to The Weather Network the earliest in 56 years. That may be why interest hit a five-year high. Either way, the peak is the week men go looking. A coat made to your measurements and ordered that week is ready around Christmas.

What a Toronto winter actually does

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1991–2020 normals for Toronto Pearson:

NovDecJanFebMar
Mean temperature4.1°C−1.6°C−5.0°C−4.4°C0.6°C
Nights at or below 0°C14.625.527.526.423.4
Days that stay below 0°C1.510.716.913.76.3
Snowfall9.3 cm24.1 cm31.5 cm27.7 cm17.2 cm
Days with wind chill below −200.22.88.87.01.8

Three things follow for the coat:

  • November is a coat month, but not a heavy-coat month. Half its nights freeze, yet only a day and a half stays below zero all day. A mid-weight wool or cashmere coat is right from the first week.
  • The hard cold is January and February. That is when the weight of the cloth earns its keep, along with a collar that turns up and closes.
  • Downtown runs warmer. The Toronto City station averages 1.1 to 1.5°C warmer than Pearson from October to March. A man who works on Bay Street and lives in the 905 is dressing for two climates.

This winter may be wet rather than cold

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, writing on 10 September 2026, put the chance of a very strong El Niño this winter at more than 90 percent. Canadian outlooks built on that lean towards a milder Ontario winter, with more of its precipitation falling as rain and freezing rain. Pearson already averages about five days of freezing rain from November to March.

That is a probability, not a promise. NOAA updates it on 8 October. But it is an argument for a coat that copes with wet: a trench or a raincoat alongside the wool, rather than only the heaviest cloth you can find.

Which coat

Sam makes cashmere coats, the Chesterfield, the polo coat, the covert coat, the topcoat, the car coat, the peacoat, the trench and raincoats, each cut to your measurements. He does not make down coats.

A coat that goes over a suit is measured over the jacket you will wear under it, which is the whole reason to have one made. Overcoat styles, explained → · Down coat or wool overcoat? → · Coat over a suit: the Toronto commute →

Common questions

Straight answers
How do I choose a fabric and colour?

Start with where you'll wear it and how often. Navy and charcoal earn their keep first; patterns and lighter shades come later. I lay fabric in the light of the room you'll wear it in and we narrow from there. You don't need to know weaves.

What fabric is best for a Toronto winter?

A mid-weight worsted or a flannel around 11–13oz: warm, holds its press, and heavy enough not to crease on the drive downtown. I'll also cut the jacket with room for a proper overcoat on top.

What about summer suits?

High-twist fresco, linen or wool hopsack around 8oz: open weaves that breathe and travel. Linen creases by design; if that bothers you, we go fresco. Browse the fabric library and I'll point you to the coolest options.

Do you offer vegan or wool-free fabric?

Yes. I keep vegan suiting and shirtings (recycled and plant-based fabrics that tailor and press well) for clients who want no wool. They're in the fabric library, tagged vegan.

What do the Super numbers (100s, 120s, 150s) mean?

They measure the fineness of the wool fibre: higher numbers are finer and softer, but also more delicate. A Super 150s feels beautiful and marks easily; a Super 110s is tougher for daily wear. Finer isn't always better; it depends how you'll use the suit.

Down is warmer for its weight; wool blocks the wind, shrugs off damp and looks like tailoring over a suit. When each one is the right coat for a Toronto winter, why many men own both, and how to get a warm coat that doesn't look like everyone else's.
