How do you fit a boy who is still growing?
The suit is cut with room to let out in the sleeve and trouser over the next two years, and the measurements stay on file for the one after. Fathers are often measured at the same visit, so father and son are cut to match in the photographs.
Off-the-rack rarely fits a growing boy: too long in the sleeve one month, too tight in the shoulder the next. Cut to measure with a little built-in room, a boy's suit fits properly now and can be let out as he grows, so it lasts more than one occasion.

What age does this start at?
Whenever a boy has an occasion and nothing that fits: a bar mitzvah, a brother's wedding, a first interview. There is no lower age, though the younger he is the more the growing room matters.
How much growing room do you leave?
Enough to let the sleeve and the trouser out over about two years, which is the realistic life of a boy's suit. The seams are left generous where they can be without spoiling the line, and the measurements stay on file for the next one.
When should we order for a bar mitzvah?
Six to eight weeks out. Making takes three to four weeks, and the fitting is best kept for the last two weeks, so a late growth spurt is caught before the day rather than after it. Much earlier than that and a growing boy can outgrow the fit.
Will he wear it again?
Usually yes, once or twice more, and that is what the let-out allowance is for. Be realistic though: a suit bought at thirteen is not going to last to sixteen, and Sam would rather tell you that than sell you a size too big.
Can father and son be made to match?
That is one of the most common requests, and the easiest thing to get right when both are measured at the same visit. Same fabric run, coordinated details, cut to two very different bodies.
Does he need to stand still for long?
Not really. The measuring is a few minutes, and Sam has done this with enough eleven-year-olds to work quickly. Bring the shoes he will actually wear on the day.
