Does Sam alter suits he didn't make?
Yes. Suits, jackets and trousers, whether Sam made them or not: off the rack, from another tailor, or handed down. He sees it on you first, quotes before anything is unpicked, and says so plainly when a garment isn't worth altering.
Most suits are bought off the rack and most of them need something: sleeves a finger too long, a waist cut for a different man, trousers that pool on the shoe. A good alteration is the difference between a suit that looks bought and one that looks yours, and it is the same skill Sam uses on the suits he makes, applied to one someone else cut.
The work is done at the studio in Vaughan, just north of Steeles on the Thornhill line, for clients from across Toronto and the GTA. Wear the shirt and the shoes you'll wear with it, so the sleeve and the hem are set to how you'll actually dress.

Hemmed to the shoes you wear, plain or with turn-ups. Tapered through the leg. Taken in or let out at the waist and seat, where the seam allows.
Suits
The jacket and trousers together, fitted in one visit so they agree: the suit for a wedding, a new job, or the one that has been in the closet since it fit.
What alters well, and what doesn't.
Alters well
Sleeve length, the waist of a jacket, trouser hems, tapering, and a waistband within the seam allowance. These are routine, and they make the biggest difference for the least work.
Rarely worth it

For a wedding, bring the groom's and the groomsmen's suits in together and in good time, so every one is fitted before the day and the row looks planned. If a suit isn't worth altering and you'd rather have one that fits from the start, Sam also makes suits to measure, including big and tall.

Do you alter dresses, wedding gowns or shirts?
No. Sam's alterations are suits, jackets and trousers only. For a dress or a wedding gown, a dressmaker or a bridal alterations specialist is the right person.
How much does an alteration cost?
It depends on the garment and the work, so Sam quotes it when he has seen it on you, before anything is unpicked. If a small alteration is all it needs, that is what he will say.
How long does it take?
It depends on the work and on what is already on the bench. Sam will tell you when it will be ready when you bring it in; if you have a date, say so at the start.
Is it worth altering, or should I buy new?
Sleeves, waists, hems and tapering are almost always worth it. Shoulders that are too wide, a jacket that is too short, or a fused jacket that has started to bubble usually are not, and Sam will tell you that rather than take the job.
Can the groomsmen's suits be altered for a wedding?
Yes. If the groomsmen have bought their suits off the rack, bring them in together, well before the wedding, so every suit is fitted in time and the row looks planned.
What should I bring?
The garment, and the shirt and shoes you will wear with it. The shoes decide the trouser length, and the shirt decides how much cuff shows under the sleeve.
