Fall and winter 2026 in Toronto: every date worth dressing for, and the last day to order

Updated October 2026 · Sam’s Menswear editorial team

A line drawing in gold chalk on a dark ground: a wall calendar with three days ringed, surrounded by a snowflake, an overcoat on a hanger, a bow tie and a lit menorah
Drawn for this guide: the season's dates, ringed on one calendar.

Between the clocks going back on 1 November and the first seder on 21 April, a Toronto man has about a dozen dates he will be looked at. Almost all of them are on the calendar a year ahead, and almost everyone still starts thinking about clothes the week of.

Google’s own numbers show it. Ontario searches for “overcoat” have peaked in the week of 20 November every year since 2022. Searches for Chanukah and Purim peak in the week of the holiday itself. That is fine for buying something off a rail. For something made to your measurements, it is three weeks too late.

So here is the season with the arithmetic already done.

The working numbers

These are the studio’s real turnarounds, not hopeful ones:

  • A suit or a tuxedo: three to four weeks from the first appointment, with one fitting on the finished garment.
  • A shirt: two to three weeks.
  • An overcoat: 35 days.
  • A rush: twelve days, and only if the cloth is in stock. It is a favour rather than a service, so plan around the normal times.
  • A reorder from a pattern already on file: two to three weeks.

The studio is closed on Saturdays and closes at 2 pm on Fridays. Sundays run 9 am to 8 pm, which is usually the easiest day. Sam can also come to your office or your home, for the first appointment and for the fitting, if that is easier.

The calendar

“Comfortable” is four weeks before the date. “Latest” is three weeks, still inside the normal turnaround, with less room if anything needs a second look. Where the arithmetic lands on a Saturday, the date shown is the Friday before.

The coat comes first

An overcoat takes 35 days, longer than a suit, and it is the garment the weather asks for first.

Environment Canada’s 1991–2020 normals for Toronto Pearson put November’s mean temperature at 4.1°C, with 14.6 nights at or below freezing. By January the mean is −5.0°C, and on 8.8 days the wind chill drops below −20. The full numbers, and which coat suits which month, are in the overcoat guide. Overcoat by 16 October →

The light goes on 1 November

The clocks go back at 2 am on Sunday 1 November. Sunset on Saturday 31 October is 6:09 pm; on the Sunday it is 5:08 pm. It keeps falling to about 4:40 pm around 8 December, and on 21 December Toronto gets 8 hours and 55 minutes of daylight. The clocks go forward again on Sunday 14 March 2027.

For three months, most of the people who see your suit will see it under office lights, restaurant lights and streetlights. Cloth that looks one colour by the window can look another under LEDs. Choose it by daylight, which is one more reason for an appointment on a Sunday morning.

Six months without Yom Tov

After Simchas Torah on 4 October there is no Yom Tov until Pesach on 22 April 2027. Chanukah and Purim are not Yom Tov days, so for six months the studio’s only closed day is Saturday.

Two things are worth knowing:

  • The Friday is short. Candle lighting in Toronto reaches 4:22 pm on Friday 4 December and Friday 11 December, the earliest of the year. The studio closes at 2 pm on Fridays, so in December a Friday fitting is a short one.
  • 5787 is a leap year. There are two months of Adar, so Purim falls late, on Tuesday 23 March, and the first seder is on Wednesday 21 April. In 2026 they were 3 March and 1 April.

Both have their own guides. Chanukah, Purim and Pesach: the dates and the order days → · The bar mitzvah calendar, Shabbos by Shabbos →

Where these dates come from

  • Temperatures: Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Toronto Pearson.
  • Sunrise, sunset, candle lighting and Jewish dates: Hebcal for Toronto. Candle lighting is 18 minutes before sunset; your community’s custom may differ.
  • Event dates: the organisers’ own pages.
  • Search timing: Google Trends for Ontario, five years to September 2026.

The office-party Thursdays are examples rather than a survey. If your party is on another night, count back four weeks from it.

Common questions

While we're here.

Straight answers
How long does a custom suit take?

About three to four weeks for a suit, and two to three for a shirt. Once your pattern is on file the clock doesn't change much, but everything before the cutting does: no measuring, no guessing, no starting from zero.

How far ahead should I order a wedding suit?

Two to three months out is comfortable. The suit itself takes three to four weeks, so that is breathing room for fabric choices, coordinating a party, and a fitting with no clock on it. Closer is often still possible; the fastest genuine rush is twelve days.

Can you do a rush order?

Twelve days is the fastest I'll go, and only if the fabric is on hand and my bench allows it that month. Call me and I'll tell you straight whether I can do it justice in the time, rather than promise and disappoint.

How many fittings will I need?

Usually one. The garment comes to the fitting finished and is corrected on your body. Where a build is harder to fit, Sam makes a sample suit first and tries that on you before the good fabric is cut. Reorders from a kept pattern need no fitting at all.

I'm planning to lose (or gain) weight. Should I wait before ordering?

If a big change is coming soon, wait until you're near your steady weight; fabric cut to a body in motion fights you later. If the date can't move, we cut with seam allowance and I adjust at the fittings. Tell me your plans and we'll time it right.
