What shirt and tie go with a charcoal suit? Six combinations, drawn

Charcoal is navy’s serious older brother: darker, quieter and a little more formal, the suit for the day that matters. Because it has almost no colour of its own, it depends on the shirt and tie to give it life, and it rewards contrast more than any other colour.

The rule: let the shirt do the lighting
A charcoal suit is nearly neutral, so the shirt is the brightest thing on you and the tie is the only real colour. Keep the shirt light, white or a pale colour, and let the tie carry the colour: a deep red, a navy, a silver. A dark shirt takes away the one source of light the outfit has.
Six that work
- White shirt, oxblood tie. The classic, and the most authoritative combination in menswear. Board meetings, interviews, funerals. Draw it
- White shirt, silver tie. Crisp and cool, sharp enough for an evening event or a winter wedding. Draw it
- Sky blue shirt, navy tie. The office default: a little softer than white, still entirely serious. Draw it
- Pink shirt, oxblood tie. Pink warms charcoal up, and oxblood keeps it grown-up. Draw it
- Pencil stripe, navy tie. A fine stripe adds pattern without noise; the solid navy tie keeps it calm. Draw it
- White shirt, open collar. Without a tie, charcoal looks relaxed but still expensive. Dinners, drinks, a Friday. Draw it
The one to avoid
Charcoal on charcoal: a dark grey or black shirt and a black tie. It reads as a costume rather than a suit, and in daylight it looks like it is trying too hard. For an evening monochrome look, a black suit carries it better.
Shoes and the rest
- Shoes: black. Charcoal sits close enough to black that the two agree, where brown can look slightly at odds. Black shoes or brown goes through it.
- Pocket square: white linen, or a touch of the tie’s colour in a pattern.
- Where it fits in a wardrobe: charcoal is the second suit after navy, and the anchor of a four-day office rotation.
