Plenty of tailors advertise a house call. Here is the straight answer about this one.
Sam will come to you for a short first visit, by arrangement. The measuring and the choosing: the tape, a fabric selection, and the conversation about how you actually stand and what you need the garment for.
Two honest things about that, before you plan around it.
It is by arrangement, not a booked service. There is no published area and no published price, deliberately. You call, Sam says what is possible and what it involves, and you both decide from there. Ask early and he will tell you straight rather than promise and disappoint.
It is the first visit only. The fitting comes later, on the finished garment, and that still happens at the studio. This is not Sam being precious about it, and it is worth understanding why, because it affects the suit you end up with.
Why the fitting still happens at the studio
Because a fitting is not measuring. It is a wall of fabric in daylight, a three-way mirror, a pinning surface, and chalk that has to go on straight. A living room gives you none of those, and every one of them changes the garment.
The light alone decides things. A navy that looks black under a kitchen bulb reads properly by the studio window, and men change their minds about fabric constantly once they see it honestly. Choosing a suit under the wrong light is how people end up with a colour they never quite loved.
And you cannot judge a shoulder line in a hallway mirror. The shoulder is the one part of a jacket that has to be right at the fitting, because it is the part nobody can correct afterwards.
So what is each visit actually for
The visit to you, if you arrange one. Short. Measurements taken by hand, a look at fabrics, and a proper conversation about what you need. Enough to get the work started without you losing an afternoon.
The visit to the studio, later. The finished garment goes on you, in the right light, in front of the right mirror, and anything that needs moving gets marked. Alterations are part of the order rather than a bill at the end.
For most men that is two visits total, and one of them can happen at their kitchen table.
When it is worth asking for
- A wedding party. This is the obvious one. A group measured around somebody’s table on a Sunday afternoon beats eight men trying to find the same free hour. More on running that properly.
- A schedule that genuinely will not bend. Court dates, a travel week, a job that does not let you leave the building.
- Anyone who cannot easily travel. Say so when you call. It is exactly the case this is for.
What Sam will not do is promise a visit and then disappoint you, which is the more common story in this trade. If he cannot do it properly he will say so on the phone rather than after you have cleared your afternoon.
The part that does not change
Whichever way the first visit happens, your measurements are taken once and kept. Everything after that — the reorder, the second suit, your son’s first jacket — is a phone call. Name a fabric and a collar and nobody has to measure you again.
That is the real economy of it. One proper measuring, however it happens, and then years of not repeating it.
How to arrange it
