The Bathurst–Lawrence and Lawrence Manor community is where Sam's traditional work lives: Shabbos suits, simcha garments, and the fine dark suit that reads as kavod in shul.
Along Bathurst from Lawrence to Wilson is one of the oldest, closest Jewish communities in Toronto, and it's where most of Sam's traditional work begins. He has dressed Lawrence Manor and Lawrence Plaza families for years: the fine dark suit for Shabbos, the bekishe and kapota, the kittel, and the bar mitzvah suit a boy grows into. Sam knows what these garments are for, not only what they look like, and that is why fathers send their sons.
It's about ten kilometres straight up Bathurst to the studio, just past Steeles, which is where the fitting happens and where the fabric books live. Everything is one-on-one, dignified and discreet, and never fitted on Shabbos or Yom Tov. Chosson wardrobes are drawn together and finished in the days before the wedding; a whole party can be measured in a single visit.
For the men of the community who spend the week in an office, Sam comes to them: the first appointment, the measuring, a selection of cloth and the conversation, at your office, whether that is downtown, in North York or on Bathurst itself. The fitting on the finished garment is twenty minutes up Bathurst at the studio, with the fabric books and the mirrors, and like everything else it is never on Shabbos or Yom Tov.

Bathurst Street, the community’s spine.
Lawrence Manor was built in the 1940s between Bathurst and the Allen, and Lawrence Plaza opened on the corner in 1953. Along Bathurst, from just south of Lawrence to past Steeles, runs the most concentrated Jewish community in the city: on both sides of the Bathurst & Lawrence corner more than a third of residents are Jewish, against under four per cent across Toronto, and the shops on the west side of Bathurst run from the 401 to just north of Lawrence.
It is a corner of two communities. Englemount-Lawrence is one-fifth Filipino, and Bathurst & Wilson, just north, is Toronto's Little Manila, where Taste of Manila closes Bathurst every August. The calendar that decides most suits here is the Jewish one, the High Holidays in the autumn and Pesach in the spring, and the studio keeps it: closed on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

It depends on the fabric and the garment. Sam gives an honest quote at the consultation, with no showroom markup, and the first conversation costs nothing.
Does Sam make bar mitzvah suits for the community?
Yes. Bar mitzvah suits are cut with room to let out over the next two years, and the pattern is kept for the next suit. Fathers are often measured at the same visit.
Are you closed on Shabbos and Yom Tov?
Always. Fittings are by appointment, one family at a time, and never on Shabbos or Yom Tov.
